What the Barksdale Incursions Reveal About America’s Airspace Vulnerability

For nearly a week in March 2026, waves of unidentified aircraft penetrated the restricted airspace over Barksdale Air Force Base, home to the nation's B-52 strategic bomber fleet, forcing shelter-in-place orders and shutting down flight operations during an active bombing campaign in Yemen. A confidential military briefing dated March 15 and reviewed by ABC News described multiple waves of 12 to 15 objects operating directly over the flight line between March 9 and 15. The objects displayed non-commercial signal characteristics, long-range control links, and resistance to electronic jamming. Standard military countermeasures failed. Analysts assessed "with high confidence" that unauthorized operations would continue.

Barksdale was not an isolated event. It was the latest in a pattern of sophisticated aerial intrusions over America's most sensitive military installations, a pattern that Americans for Safe Aerospace has been warning about for years and one that exposes critical vulnerabilities extending far beyond the gates of any military base.

The Barksdale incursion follows a series of alarming precedents. In December 2023, objects estimated at 20 feet in length flew over Langley Air Force Base in Virginia for 17 consecutive nights at altitudes of 3,000 to 4,000 feet and speeds exceeding 100 mph. The incursions were significant enough to force the relocation of F-22 Raptors and the cancellation of nighttime training missions. In California, Air Force Plant 42, a classified facility where some of America's most advanced aircraft are developed, experienced seven consecutive nights of drone overflights in August 2024. More recently, unidentified drones have been detected over Fort McNair in Washington, D.C., where senior Cabinet officials reside.

The scale is staggering. NORTHCOM Commander General Gregory Guillot testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee in February 2025 that 350 drone detections were reported across 100 different military installations in 2024 alone. That figure captures only what was reported over military facilities. Incidents affecting civilian airspace and local communities go largely untracked.

As ASA founder Ryan Graves testified before the House Oversight Committee in July 2023: "If UAP are foreign drones, it is an urgent national security problem. If it is something else, it is an issue for science. In either case, it is a concern for safety of flight."

What Barksdale Tells Us About the Capability Gap

What makes the Barksdale incursion especially alarming is the operational sophistication of the objects involved. According to reporting on the leaked briefing, the flights lasted approximately four hours each day and used varied ingress routes with deliberate maneuvering inside restricted airspace. Rather than going dark to avoid detection, the operators left visible lights on, behavior the briefing interpreted as deliberate security-response testing, essentially probing how the base would react.

The objects operated in dispersed patterns that made triangulation virtually impossible. Analysts noted the aircraft appeared to be custom-built, requiring "advanced knowledge" of signal operations. Some assessed that the design surpasses almost anything in the U.S. arsenal. The objects may have been autonomous or semi-autonomous, equipped with sensors that adapted behavior in response to jamming attempts.

This tracks with what was observed at Langley, where the objects displayed light patterns that did not conform to FAA regulations or any known standard. The gap between what these operators can do and what our defenses can reliably stop is widening. Each new incident demonstrates capabilities that exceed the last, and each time, the military's response options appear inadequate.

Barksdale also exposed something that extends well beyond military bases: no one clearly owns this problem. When mysterious aerial activity swept across New Jersey in late 2024, Graves described the chaotic response:

"The FAA wasn't responsible for it 'cause it was so low or it was over military bases and our military commanders couldn't do anything 'cause they were, well, 10 feet outside the gate and someone might get hurt and we don't really have the right equipment. Local law enforcement didn't know what to do with it 'cause it's a federal issue in the sky. It was a mess. And no one really knew how to respond to this."

This is the core problem: the FAA defers because the objects fly too low or over restricted zones. Military commanders lack authority beyond installation perimeters, and General Guillot has specifically requested expanded authorities to address threats before they reach the base. Local law enforcement has no clear protocol and limited resources. The result is a patchwork of agencies, each pointing to the other, while unknown objects operate with impunity.

As Graves has put it: "We don't have to know where they're from to know it's a problem. The fact is, we have unknown assets operating over those types of facilities. Full stop."

ASA has received over 1,100 reports from aviators, radar operators, and trained civilian observers describing near-midair collisions, sustained radar tracks, and objects exceeding known flight characteristics. These reports represent a persistent and unresolved safety hazard, one that exists whether these objects turn out to be foreign surveillance platforms or something else entirely.

While federal coordination remains fragmented, state governments have begun filling the gap, and ASA has actively supported these efforts.

On January 12, 2026, Governor Phil Murphy signed Assembly Bill 5712, making New Jersey the first state in the nation to fund dedicated UAP research. The legislation appropriates $2.5 million in grants to public universities to support the establishment of a Center for the Study of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, alongside an additional $1 million for an Air Traffic Controller Loan Redemption Program. The center will enable universities to develop sensor networks, analyze pilot encounter data, and establish standardized collection protocols, building the kind of rigorous scientific methodology this subject has lacked.

In Vermont, Representative Troy Headrick has introduced H.654, legislation that would create a ten-member statewide task force co-chaired by the Commissioner of Public Safety and the Secretary of Transportation to scientifically evaluate unidentified aerial activity, coordinate with federal partners, and develop standardized incident-reporting protocols.

These initiatives matter because research infrastructure is safety infrastructure. Without systematic data collection and analysis, we cannot assess the scope of the threat, develop effective responses, or protect the pilots and communities affected by these encounters.

The Barksdale incursion should force a reckoning. We are not dealing with hobbyist drones or isolated curiosities. We are dealing with sophisticated, coordinated operators who have demonstrated the ability to penetrate restricted airspace over nuclear-capable bomber bases, resist military countermeasures, and evade identification, repeatedly and with apparent impunity.

Expanded state-level research infrastructure following the New Jersey and Vermont models, building sensor networks and standardized data-collection protocols nationwide.

Clear federal chains of responsibility, including the expanded counter-UAS authorities NORTHCOM has requested, so that drone detections over military bases, civilian airspace, and local communities do not fall through jurisdictional cracks.

Protected reporting channels for pilots, law enforcement officers, and facility operators, so encounters are documented rather than suppressed by professional stigma.

Transparency about the scope of the threat so that state and local governments, not just the Pentagon, can make informed decisions about protecting their communities.

Rigorous scientific investigation of objects that remain unidentified after initial assessment, ensuring we understand what is operating in our airspace regardless of origin.

Three hundred and fifty detections over military installations in a single year. Repeated incursions over bases housing nuclear-capable bombers, advanced fighter jets, and classified development programs. And a jurisdictional framework that leaves every level of government pointing at someone else. The warnings have been clear. The question is whether Barksdale will finally be the incident that compels action.
